WHAT IS AAAG? The African-American Association of Ghana (AAAG) is an association of Africans born and raised in America, who have repatriated to Ghana. Membership is also open to naturalized Americans of African descent as well as continental Africans. The organization in its current configuration was conceived in 1990, although African-Americans have been living and working in Ghana since the 1950’s. Some came at the invitation of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, to assist in Nation Building at the dawn of independence. Among the professionals that heeded Kwame Nkrumah’s call were Doctors Sara and Robert E. Lee who arrived in what was then the Gold Coast with their two young boys. Together they started the first dental practice in Ghana. Dr. Robert E. Lee, who still lives in Ghana, received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Ghana in 2008, one of two African Americans to receive that honor, the other being Dr. W.E.B. DuBois. African-Americans continue to make great contributions toward developing Ghana through a broad array of businesses, products, and services. The number of African Americans resident in Ghana is unknown although estimates are upwards of 2,000 throughout the country.
